Hit the road and explore the Everglades in a brand-new episode of Florida Road Trip. WUCF’s Emmy Award winning program returns with all new episodes exploring the history and stories that make up Florida.
On Thursday, October 13, travel to the St. Petersburg and learn how it got its name. Veteran television journalist and host Buddy Pittman will explore this Sunshine City and take you inside the history that includes the honor of having the first ever commercial aviation flight in the world in 1914. And in that same year, spring training baseball began in St. Pete. Viewers will also get to go inside the world’s largest collection of autographed baseballs at the St. Petersburg Museum of History.
“We have an exhibit that’s basically the who’s who of the past of baseball,” said Rui Farias, Executive Director of the St. Petersburg Museum of History. “The exhibit actually uses baseball to teach American history. It touches on women’s rights; it touches on civil rights. It has a historic timeline that, you know, compares baseball to specific events throughout the country.”
From baseball to botany, head to the center of St. Pete and explore Sunken Gardens, home to some of the oldest plants in the state of Florida. Viewers will explore the transformative history of the Sunshine Skyway bridge, famous for being the longest cable-stayed concrete bridge in the world. And a trip to St. Pete isn’t complete without a visit to the Dali Museum where technology and art come to life.
