This July, WUCF brought learning and laughter to libraries across Central Florida with its “On My Way to K” summer initiative.
The free events invited families to explore hands-on activities crafted by WUCF’s education team and designed to help young children prepare for kindergarten.
The “On My Way to K” tour made stops at the DeLand Regional Library in Volusia County, the Winter Park Library in Orange County, and the Hart Memorial Library in Osceola County. Geared toward children ages 2–8 (but welcoming all), the events were packed with engaging activities that help young minds grow.
“WUCF is valuable. As a parent, especially stay-at-home moms… we’re looking for stuff for our kids to do, especially free —thank God, I’m not even going to lie, I’m glad it's free—I’ve got two kids and it was very helpful. I saw her interaction with other kids, playing. It was a really good event, I really loved this event,” said DeLand mom Donicia Lockett.
Each station encouraged exploration, from problem-solving games that sparked critical thinking, to hands-on crafts that build creativity and fine motor skills.
Over 160 kids at all three locations took part in movement-based activities, building skills needed for kindergarten success.
“The value that WUCF brings to my family is community. It’s a big deal because, even though we live in our own little bubble, my children get to explore the world in different ways—in safe ways—that I can either be there for from afar or actually help them hands-on for whatever things that they need help with,” said Stephanie, a mom at the Winter Park event.
What is "On My Way to K"?
"On My Way to K" is WUCF's summer early learning initiative, aimed at preparing children for kindergarten by focusing on essential educational skills.
WUCF offers free resources for all learners, including a downloadable guidebook, family-fun workshops, and hands-on activities. Through partnerships with local Central Florida organizations, OMWTK provides families the tools to foster a lifelong love of learning and provides confidence for children entering elementary school.
What to Expect at an OMWTK Event?
WUCF’s "On My Way to K" events occur annually in local libraries during the summer, providing families an opportunity to bond through education. Furthermore, each event provides a sensory-friendly space for small learners who might need a less busy, quieter place.
Each work station is specially designed to encourage several aspects of early childhood development, including:
- Creativity and Movement
- Social-Emotional Development
- Problem Solving
